The Czech Science Foundation (GACR), as the most important provider of funding for basic research projects in the Czech Republic, will begin funding over 400 scientific projects from all areas of basic research starting next year. A total of over CZK 3.7 billion (€153 million) will be allocated to these projects.
“The Czech Science Foundation is here to give scientists the opportunity to have their scientific projects independently evaluated by experts in the field, and to fund the best ones,” says GACR President Prof. Milan Jirsa.
All project proposals have undergone a two-stage evaluation process involving exclusively scientists from Czech and those abroad. “The evaluation process complies with the standards of the most prestigious European basic research grant provider – the European Research Council (ERC). Thanks to its standards, the outputs of our evaluation are used both by partner institutions abroad in international projects and by Czech institutions to fund other excellent projects for which there are no funds left in the GACR budget,” adds Professor Jirsa.
Standard Projects
Standard Projects form the basis of grant funding for basic research in the Czech Republic. From 2026 onwards, GACR will fund 336 new Standard Projects worth CZK 3 billion (approx. €124 million). Project proposals with a duration of up to three years can be submitted by all researchers and their teams, regardless of their age and experience. This project scheme has been funded since 1993. Due to budget constraints, the proportion of projects receiving funding is at its historically lowest, reaching only 14%.

Restart Grants
The latest grant tender, announced for the first time this year, is Restart Grants. These will enable 19 excellent female scientists to restart their careers after taking a break for parental leave or to care for a dependent person. The duration of the funding will be two to four years, and will depend on the workload chosen. Nearly CZK 70 million (approx. €2.9 million) will be allocated to these new projects.

POSTDOC INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP
Tenders under the POSTDOC INDIVIDUAL FELLOWSHIP (PIF) scheme are announced in OUTGOING and INCOMING subcategories. The first one will enable early-career scientists to complete a two-year internship abroad, where they will gain valuable experience in the early stages of their careers. In the third year, they will put this experience to good use at a Czech institution. The second subcategory of the scheme (PIF INCOMING) allows researchers from other countries to work at a scientific institution in the Czech Republic. This tender is also used for the return of young Czech researchers from abroad. A total of 30 early-career researchers will receive these three-year grants starting next year. The grants will amount to over CZK 145 million (approx. €6 million).

JUNIOR STAR
JUNIOR STAR grants are targeted at excellent early-career scientists within eight years of completing their PhD who have already published in prestigious international journals and have significant international experience. Thanks to a five-year project with a maximum budget of up to CZK 25 million (approx. €1 million), they have the opportunity to become scientifically independent and even establish their own research group, which can become a source of new research topics coming to Czech science. In 2026, eighteen early-career scientists will begin working on the project. Over the next five years, over CZK 425 million will be allocated to these projects.
International Projects
GACR currently cooperates with 12 grant providers from around the world. The results of tenders and calls announced jointly in cooperation with a partner agency in another country will be announced gradually after their approval with the agency involved.
The decision to fund the above-mentioned projects is subject to the condition that the Czech Republic’s state budget for 2026 allocates specific funds to GACR in the amount approved by the Research, Development and Innovation Council and the Czech government. The funds will be allocated to the above-mentioned researchers only after the state budget law comes into effect.
